The James Bute Paint Company founded in 1869 by James Bute was one of Houston’s longest continually running businesses. In 1909 the newly constructed facility at 711 William St. became the company’s headquarters. Designed by architect Olle J. Lorehn (1864-1939) it is now the Dakota Lofts. Bute Paint closed in 1991. The Bute family made many contributions to development of Houston including the McKee St Bridge project.
